The Codes Department ensures that the public's safety, health, and general welfare are secure by enforcing Codes standards governing new construction, existing housing, manufactured homes, and signs. Responsibilities of this department include building permit issuance and inspection, floodplain management, building condemnations, removal of disabled vehicles, property maintenance, high grass, and the enforcement of other standards and regulations found in the City of Friendsville Municipal Code and Ordinance.
What requires a permit?
Any owner or authorized agent who intends to construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move, demolish, or change the occupancy or use of a building or structure or to erect, install, enlarge, alter, repair, remove, convert, or replace any electrical, gas, mechanical, or plumbing system regulated by this code or to cause any such work to be done, must first apply to the building official and obtain the required permit.
To clarify, the following types of work require a permit:
- New construction of residential or commercial structures.
- Additions to residential or commercial structures, including garages.
- Storage sheds over 400 sq. ft.
- Significant alterations or repairs to residential or commercial structures, including changes in commercial tenants.
- Placement or replacement of a mobile home (only one mobile home is allowed per lot).
- Demolition of residential or commercial structures.
- Grading projects not associated with a construction project that involve more than 200 cubic yards of cut or fill.
- New driveways connecting to Town roads/streets. Driveway permits on State of Tennessee roads must be obtained from the Tennessee Department of Transportation at (865) 594-2456.
- Fences 7 feet tall or higher.
- In-ground swimming pools.
- Retaining walls over 4 feet high, measured from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall.
- Deck additions greater than 120 square feet.
- Signs – contact the City of Friendsville for specific requirements.
